Feb 7th 2013 AGII CONFERENCE

Hosted by UK consultant Simon Ward, I was given the opportunity to speak along with Simon at a conference. Simons presentation focused on analyzing data to look for opportunities in grain marketing. He gave a number of examples where with good information and analysis, perceived random events can actually be forecast. Using statistical analysis, it is possible to predict times when you should and shouldn’t be in the market selling grain.  My talk focused on the environment we are cropping in, which is on the opposite side of the pole to UK farming where rainfall is rarely the limiting factor.  I highlighted the need to understand and manage risk as well as knowing and understanding the return you get for every dollar you spend on inputs within your business. I received many questions, and the UK farmers were amazed at how were are able to profitable farm with such low rainfall.
